Repeat Prescribing Changes
From 1 November 2016, the CCGs in Bradford are implementing a new scheme which means that pharmacies will no longer be able to order medicines on behalf of patients. This means that patients will need to order their repeat prescription directly from their GP practice.
It is anticipated that all GP practices in Bradford will have phased in this change in by 31 January 2017.
The aim is to empower patients to have greater control and understanding of their medicines. It will also help to improve the quality and safety of services to patients and eliminate prescription waste.
Patients can save time by ordering their repeat prescriptions securely online or by nominating a trusted family member/ carer to do this on their behalf, if they wish. This online service is known as ‘SystmOnline’ and is available via GP practice websites or by downloading the free ‘SystmOnline’ app for mobile phones/tablets.
It also enables patients in Bradford to book their GP appointments online at any time. For more information about online services click here.
Patients or their carers/family members can still order prescriptions in writing, or by handing in the tear-off part of their repeat prescription to the GP surgery. Practices will continue to send the prescriptions directly to the nominated chemist of patients’ choice, who will then dispense the medicines as usual.
Although there is no change to treatment, patients may have questions about the medicines they are taking. These questions should be directed to their GP practice.
Any concerns or complaints should be raised with the Bradford CCGs patient support line, information about how to do this can be found on the CCGs websites:

Repeat Prescriptions
Repeat prescriptions can be requested by ticking the items required on the right hand side of your repeat prescription form and placing it in the box at reception. Always allow 48 hours (2 working days) for issue of any repeat prescriptions.
Your prescription can be sent to you by post (please provide a stamped addressed envelope). All repeat prescriptions are reviewed every six months, through a consultation with the doctor or the Practice Pharmacist.
You will be informed by the Practice when your review is due – It is very important that you attend.
Prescription Charges
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
NHS Prescription costs as of April 1 2011
- The current prescription charge is £7.40.
- From 1 April 2010 a three monthly PPC is £29.10. This saves you money if you need four or more items in three months.
- A 12 month certificate is £104.00 and saves money if 15 or more items are needed in 12 months.
PPCs are available by 10 monthly direct debit instalment payments. The prescription prepayment certificates allow anyone to obtain all the prescriptions they need for £2 per week.
There is further information about prescription exemptions, fees and PPCs available on the NHS website.
