Prescriptions

Repeat Medication

If you need to take regular medication your doctor may give you a REPEAT prescription without the need for you to be seen every time in surgery.

A repeat prescription is an item of medication that has been approved by a doctor for issue at intervals and can be signed by any Doctor in the Practice

Acute Medication

Other items you have been prescribed are ACUTE or Past medication that needs authorisation from a specific doctor before issuing.

This may take longer than 2 working days to process. Please order these items in good time.

Most local Pharmacies

  • Offer an order/delivery service for their customers.
  • If you nominate your usual Pharmacy to receive your medication we will send your prescription to them electronically saving you a journey to the surgery to collect it.

NHS App

Did you know you can manage repeat prescriptions from Grove House Surgery in the NHS App?

You can easily choose where your prescriptions are sent. So, if you know you’ll be away from home or you are moving home, you can change your nominated pharmacy from within the app.

You can also order your prescription at any time that suits you. There’s no need to wait to join a telephone queue or wait until the GP surgery opens.

It’s easy to use, and, if you hit a snag, you can go to ‘Help’ in the top right-hand corner of the app or visit nhs.uk/helpmeapp.

Find out more about the NHS App at: www.nhs.uk/nhsapp

Order repeat prescription from Prescription counter foil

With computerised repeat prescriptions you will receive a tear off slip with each prescription issued which lists all the items you have been prescribed for repeated use.

This will be one month’s supply

The week before you are due to run out of medication you should return the slip to the surgery indicating which items you require.

Please allow 2 full working days after your request is received in practice e.g. if received on a Friday it will be ready for collection on the following Wednesday. For information the pharmacy may take a further 2 days to process the prescription once it has been signed by a GP.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service. It gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the place you choose to get your medicines from.

What does this mean for you?

If you collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time.

You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.

You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be ready before you arrive.

Is this service right for you?

Yes, if you:

  • Have regular repeat prescriptions
  • don’t want or need to go to your GP practice every time to collect your repeat prescription.
  • collect your medicines from the same pharmacy most of the time
  • use a pharmacy prescription collection service now.

How can you use EPS?

You need to choose a place for your GP practice to electronically send your prescription to. This is called nomination.

Your GP Practice or Pharmacy can add your nomination for you

Can I change my nomination or cancel it and get a paper prescription?

Yes you can. If you don’t want your prescription to be sent electronically tell your GP. If you want to change or cancel your nomination speak to any pharmacist or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS, or your GP practice. Tell them before your next prescription is due or your prescription may be sent to the wrong place.

Is EPS reliable, secure and confidential?

Yes. Your electronic prescription will be seen by the same people in GP practices, pharmacies and NHS prescription payment and fraud agencies that see your paper prescription now.

For more information about EPS visit your pharmacy or GP practice

ordering early

The doctor will not, routinely, issue your prescription early. We will usually issue your prescription up to one week before it is due (in the case of monthly supply). We will not issue medication prior to this, unless there are exceptional circumstances, when a doctor will decide if early issue of your medication is appropriate and safe.

Medication Reviews

If you take medication on a regular basis you will need to attend the surgery for an annual medication review, even if you attend the hospital for your health problem.

If you receive an invite for a review at the surgery please do not ignore it as it may delay your next prescription.

If a hospital consultant/doctor/nurse alters your medication, please let us know.

When will it be ready?

The minimum time we need to process a routine request is 2 full working days

Out of Hours

If you run out of your medicines outside normal opening hours and need some urgently, there are a few ways to get an emergency supply quickly, including if you’re away from home.
