Lower the risks of Breast Cancer
While not all breast cancer risk factors are within our control, making certain lifestyle changes can help reduce your overall risk. At The Grange Medical Practice, we encourage our patients to adopt healthy habits that promote general well-being and may lower their chances of developing breast cancer.
Key Lifestyle Changes
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Being overweight, particularly after menopause, increases the risk of breast cancer. Fat tissue produces estrogen, and higher levels of this hormone can contribute to the development of certain types of breast cancer. Staying within a healthy weight range for your height can help reduce your risk.
Stay Physically Active
Regular exercise not only helps with weight management but also lowers breast cancer risk. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. This could include activities like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.
Limit Alcohol Intake
There is a clear link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. Even small amounts can increase your chances of developing the disease, so it’s advisable to limit your intake. The NHS recommends drinking no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over several days.
Quit Smoking
Smoking is linked to many types of cancer, including breast cancer. Quitting smoking will not only reduce your risk but also improve your overall health. If you’re struggling to quit, The Grange Medical Practice offers resources and support to help you.
Consider Your Hormone Levels
Certain types of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and birth control pills have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. If you’re considering HRT or have concerns about your current treatment, speak to one of our GPs about the risks and benefits.
Stay Vigilant
Adopting a healthier lifestyle doesn’t eliminate the need for regular breast screenings and self-examinations. Even with a healthy lifestyle, breast cancer can still occur, so it’s important to remain vigilant and proactive about your breast health.
At The Grange Medical Practice, we’re here to provide advice and support on breast cancer prevention and general health. If you have any concerns or questions about your breast health, don’t hesitate to book an appointment with one of our friendly and experienced GPs.
