Hand, foot and mouth disease

We’ve had increased calls to the surgery over the last couple of weeks by patients who are concerned about hand, foot and mouth disease. It is a common childhood illness, the first signs of hand, foot and mouth can be:-

  • sore throat
  • high temperature above 38C
  • not wanting to eat.

There is no cure for hand, foot and mouth disease and antibiotics wont help as it is caused by a virus.

Your local Pharmacy will be able to offer advice about treatments to relieve pain from symptoms.

If symptoms do not improve after 7 to 10 day or you are pregnant or worried about your child’s symptoms, contact your GP for advice.

Hand, foot and mouth disease can be spread to other people, please check with your GP before coming into the surgery.
