Managing Eye Infections & Irritations

Mild eye infections, dryness, and irritations are common and usually resolve with self-care.

Symptoms:

  • Redness, itching, or watery eyes.
  • Gritty sensation or mild swelling.
  • Yellow or white discharge (bacterial conjunctivitis).

Self-care options:

  • Conjunctivitis: Most cases are viral or allergic and do not need antibiotics. Use artificial tears and cool compresses.
  • Dry eyes: Lubricating eye drops are available over the counter.
  • Styes: Apply warm compresses to help drainage.

When to seek help:

  • Severe pain, vision changes, or light sensitivity.
  • Persistent symptoms lasting more than a week.
  • Eye injury or foreign body in the eye.

Pathways in South East London:

  • Minor eye conditions can be assessed by an optometrist via the Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS). Visit Local MECS Information to find your nearest provider.
