Is My Child Unwell?

Non-urgent advice: What is this page about?

As a parent or carer, it can be difficult to know how unwell your child is and when to seek medical attention. Most childhood illnesses are mild and can be managed at home, but sometimes, a child may need to see a doctor. This guide provides advice on how to assess your child’s condition and when to seek help.

Recognising Symptoms

Children can display a variety of symptoms when they are unwell. The table below provides guidance on what signs to look for and how to respond.

When to Seek Medical Help

Self-care at home: If your child has mild symptoms, ensure they get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and take appropriate medication if needed (e.g., paracetamol for fever).

Contact Eltham Medical Practice or NHS 111: If symptoms persist or worsen, or you are unsure about your child’s condition, seek medical advice.

Call 999 or visit A&E: If your child has severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or a non-fading rash, seek emergency help immediately.

General Advice

Use over-the-counter medications appropriately.

Trust your instincts—if you feel something is seriously wrong, seek medical attention.
