Asking Your Doctor for a Private Letter, Forms or Reports
Why You Might Need a Letter: Sometimes, you might need a letter from your doctor for things like:
- Travelling
- Proving you have a medical condition
- Telling your school, job, or court about your health
Warning advice: Why is there a charge?
How Long It Takes: It can take up to 3-6 weeks for your doctor to complete private work. NHS work always takes priority over private work.
What Goes in the Letter
- The doctor writes what they know to be true based on your medical records.
- You can’t tell the doctor exactly what to write. If you insist a letter is changed to suit what you feel it should say, we may withdraw our offer to write the letter.
- The doctor can refuse your request if needed and is not obliged to write this letter for you at all, as this is not an NHS requirement.
What We Can and Can’t Do
- We can write letters for traveling, medical conditions, and special requests from schools or jobs.
- We can’t write letters to prove your address, sign passport applications, or write things that aren’t already in your medical records.

Letters to support benefit claims
If you are requesting a letter to support your benefit claim, you may stand a better chance of success by using the following website rather than requesting a GP letter. Generally, if the organisation you have applied to require information regarding your health, they will write to us directly with specific questions. https://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/
