First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs)

First Contact Physiotherapists

The First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) are advanced practitioners working within primary care with extensive expertise in the clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions (MSK conditions are injuries or pain arising from of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spine).

FCPs see patients with (suspected or diagnosed) MSK conditions as the first point of contact, instead of a GP, and can be accessed directly by contacting the Practice’s reception. This gives the patient direct access to a MSK specialist.

Their role is to work with patients to decide on the most appropriate management of their condition, through education and self-management advice, and where appropriate refer for investigations, a course of physiotherapy or make referrals into secondary care services using the same pathways as GPs.
