Urgent Problems and Out of Hours

Life Threatening Emergencies

In a life threatening emergency such as sudden severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, loss of power in a limb, loss of consciousness or severe bleeding dial 999.

Accident and Emergency

Only visit your Accident and Emergency (A&E) department or call 999 for serious life threatening injuries.  The emergency services are always very busy.  Only attend A&E if you have a life threatening problem or a serious illness.

It is often obvious when someone is seriously ill. They may be unconscious, appear to have had a heart attack, have a broken bone or be bleeding heavily.

There is an accident and emergency department at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke on Trent.  It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

There is also an accident and emergency department at Macclesfield General Hospital in Macclesfield.  It is also open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Remember

If your condition is not life threatening it is usually better and quicker for you to choose another service such as Walk In Centres and Minor Injuries Units.

Choose Accident and Emergency (A&E) for

  • Severe blood loss
  • Severe chest pain
  • Life threatening choking
  • Blacking out
  • Severe breathing difficulty

Walk In Centres and Minor Injuries Unit

A walk in centre or minor injuries unit is the right place if you or a member of your family needs fast, convenient access to advice or treatment for a minor injury or illness. You do not need an appointment.
