Test results

A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test.

For example, a blood test can be used to:

• assess your general state of health
• confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
• see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning

A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child’s hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken. For some children, it may be more appropriate for the doctor to arrange the test within a hospital-based clinic.

Blood results are usually received 3-5 days after the day of your test. Results may take a little longer if the sample was on a Friday or before a bank holiday.

Patients now will be able to access a dedicated blood test clinic located at Stanney Lane Clinic in Ellesmere Port (Stanney Lane, CH65 9AE) and it will be available to patients from across the six practices in Ellesmere Port.

The clinic will be open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Friday.

An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the inside of the body.

X-rays are a very effective way of detecting problems with bones, such as fractures.  They can also often identify problems with soft tissue, such as pneumonia or breast cancer.

If the clinician has referred, you to have an xray you will need to contact the xray department 3 hours after the referral was made.

An ultrasound scan, sometimes called a sonogram, is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body.

An ultrasound scan can be used to monitor an unborn baby, diagnose a condition, or guide a surgeon during certain procedures. 

If the clinician refers you for a ultrasound or CT scan you will receive a letter in the post with the appointment date and time.

For any tests or procedures ordered by a specialist or consultant outside of the surgery. Please contact your consultant or specialist clinic for any further action. The practice will not receive these results.
