Sick (fit) notes

If you’ve been off sick for more than 7 days

For absences of over 7 days, you’ll need medical evidence for your employer. You will require a consultation with a clinician as soon as your absence goes over 7 days, to confirm that you are not fit for work.

If it is agreed you are not fit for work, you will be issued a doctor’s Fit Note. Your doctor can also give you a “Fitness For Work” note which helps you get back to work more quickly.

For illnesses lasting 7 days or less, you don’t need a sick note but you may need to complete a self-certification form. You can pick one up at our surgery reception or on this website – www.gov.uk/government
