New RSV Vaccine available for > 65 and pregnant women

Posted on:

For pregnant women (from 28 weeks onwards). Ideally not coadministered with whooping cough vaccine (given at 20 weeks plus, as if co-administered may slightly diminish response to the vaccines.) HOWEVER if woman presents at 28 weeks for RSV AND HAS MISSED PERTUSSIS then the two SHOULD be given together. The aim is to protect the infant in first 6 months of life.

We all know how horrid RSV bronchiolitis can be for babies, this is a really good thing

For adults aged 75-80 (one off vaccine akin to the pneumococcal given from 65 years). Can be co-administered with pneumococcal and shingles vaccine. Ideally not co-administered with COVAX or Flu vaccine as some evidence that it diminishes effectiveness to these. However ‘can be co-administered’ if attending is difficult.

Protection evidence is for 2 years, but it looks like only going to be offered as a one off vaccine by the NHS at this stage

KINGSTONE SURGERY WILL BE PLANNING DELIVERY OF THESE SOON.
