Pharmacies now offer support for several common conditions and can also provide oral contraception (both combined and progestogen-only pills), weight loss treatment and much more, all to help reduce the pressure on GP surgeries.

Pharmacy First & NHS Pharmacy Contraceptive Service

Pharmacy First is a service where you can access medical advice and prescription treatments, if necessary, for a range of common conditions. Normal NHS prescription charges apply.

The NHS Pharmacy Contraceptive Service enables you to continue with your current contraceptive or start a new contraceptive, depending on the outcome of your consultation. Contraception is free via this service.

What Do They Cover

Pharmacy First offers the diagnosis, treatment and NHS medication for seven common conditions, including:

  • Sinusitis
  • Sore throat
  • Earache
  • Infected insect bites
  • Impetigo
  • Shingles
  • Uncomplicated UTIs in women

You can access the NHS Pharmacy Contraceptive Service if you need to start or continue your oral contraception. The requirements are:

  • Combined pill: Ages from the first period up to 49
  • Progestogen-only pill (POP): Ages from the first period up to 54

Remember, before you contact your GP, think of your pharmacy first. Use these services if you’re looking to access advice and treatment for the above conditions or to continue current or new oral contraception.

How To Access These Services

We’ve partnered with trusted online pharmacy Chemist4U for these services, but you’re welcome to choose another provider. You can find an alternative provider here.

Simply select your condition (or contraception request) and complete a quick pre-consultation to check eligibility. If eligible, you’ll have a phone call with a trained pharmacist.

During the call, they’ll ask about your symptoms, medical history, and current medications. They’ll offer home care advice and may prescribe medication for free if you qualify.

Don’t worry–a pharmacist will always refer you to your GP, a nurse or a specialist if further care is needed. Additionally, there’s no need to visit an in-store pharmacy; Chemist4U will deliver any prescribed treatments straight to your door in discreet packaging at no extra cost.
